St Cuthbert's on Bensham Road is one of the Victorian churches Charlie painted more than once. It stands within the Bensham neighbourhood he knew better than anywhere, a few streets from Westbourne Avenue and close to the back lanes where his painting life began.
The church was not demolished. It survives as an art cafe, a fitting afterlife for a building that a Gateshead painter recorded while its future was in doubt.
