St Cuthbert's on Bensham Road was one of the Victorian churches Charlie painted before demolition took it. It stood within the Bensham neighbourhood he knew better than anywhere, a few streets from Westbourne Avenue and close to the back lanes where his painting life began.
The church is gone. Charlie's painting is among the few records of how it looked from the street. This is the pattern that defines his career: the subject persists in paint long after the builders have finished.
