The Cenotaph at Shipcote appears in Charlie's work as civic architecture given weight: a fixed monument in a town where so much else proved temporary. He painted it with the same close attention he gave the back lanes, taking seriously what official Gateshead had erected and what the community gathered around.
The memorial stands today at the junction near the Old Town Hall site and remains in use for Remembrance services.
