Francis "Pop" Rogers

Charlie's father, known always as Pop, was one of his earliest and most repeated subjects. One of Charlie's very first paintings was a portrait of Pop asleep, and the sleeping or reading figure recurs throughout the catalogue.

A bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale appears beside Pop in many of these domestic scenes, the painter's quiet shorthand for a working man at rest. The Brown Ale became one of the most recognisable signatures in the body of work.
